Smiffina Episodes - Frontline Part 3: End Game

Callum returns to work on the day of Emma's funeral. He tries to go out on a job but Gina keeps him station bound to support people who may need it given what day it is. The superintendent also wants him to lead the bearer party but Smithy isn't sure if that's a good idea. Smithy asks if she's alright and she admits she spent the night before with Emma's family . It's clear that it - and the rest of the last few months - are taking it out of her.

Karen meets Jack and tells him that it's looking more likely that it's a lone bomber targeting those he thinks are part of the Four Evils Of The Internet.

Pornography Rise:

The nightclub (the first bomb) was targeted during the day, not the nighttime when it would be full of revellers. He had shares in a pornography website and paid Gilchrist to print sleeves for pornographic DVD's for him. Gilchrist also had an account on the hardcore website that Drayton had shares in.

Racial Hatred:

Charity boss posing as a good man is actually fleecing vulnerable immigrants of their cash and makes out it's 'donations'.

He also has secret links with a racist organisation.

Identity Theft:

Carl Adams has links to having stolen other peoples identities and credit cards and had it done to him by the bomber.

Had a fake bomb planted in the garden next to his which Grace believes links to the identity theft idea - not the real person, not the real bomb. Received lots of items that can be used for bombs purchased by someone using his credit card.

The fourth is yet to come...child abuse.

Even if they have received a letter, someone who abuses children is unlikely to come forward and report it.

Uniform are called to a timber merchants where a burglary has been called in. It's a false alarm that rings a few jingle bells when the manager mentions a courier had called. Will rings the number of the informant back - just as Sally spots a bomb. She shouts his name but it's too late - the bomb explodes.

Luckily for her however it's just a flour bomb!

The warehouse is covered in CCTV and Grace is concerned why someone so forensically aware would chose somewhere crawling with cameras. The manager says he's a church warden who is heavily involved in his community and hasn't received any letters or threats. Mickey finds footage to show a courier in a crash helmet hide something near the door. A bomb disposal expert finds a memory stick. On it is a link to a website of The 4 Evils Of The Internet.

They've got just over three hours to find the next victim!

Grace sets up a meeting between the charity boss, Carl Adams and Gilchrist's friend, James Marford, in the same room. She asks if they/their friend told them that they have/had noticed something strange around them over the last few weeks which none of them say yes to. if they have computer security. The charity boss says he does now as a computer virus recently wiped out his computer and that he used a tech support company to do it but Carl did it himself. Canley Technology comes up as a link because they installed the security on two of the computers in question and Carl used to work there.

Mickey and Kezia spot that the 'courier' who set up the bomb that morning and left the USB at the warehouse makes a phone call and attempt to pinpoint the number with the help of TIU. Eventually Mickey finds out who he rang and they set up surveillance on him. He's called William Moore which is interesting as Canley Technology name Colin Moore as the man who installed firewalls on both computers.

Callum's taking the bombing rather personally. He couldn't save Emma but he's adamant he's going to save everyone else. He won't be drawn about Emma and shuts down immediately each time it's mentioned.

Smithy and Mickey watch the mans house, as he makes to leave, Jack tells Smithy to follow him and Mickey to stay and watch. "... Why are they always in such a hurry though?" Smithy sighs as the suspect starts to jog. Smithy is spotted so has to swap with Mickey to make it less obvious that they're following him. Mickey loses him but Callum and Sally catch him with Callum losing it and dragging him alone off to question him. William Moore admits talking to his brother that morning but he didn't mention it because he promised his wife he'd never speak to him again after she caught him looking at child abuse images on the internet. Callum meets up with them back at Moore's house and he's clearly put the screws on. "Whatever you've done I hope it doesn't come back to bite us..." Jack murmurs to him. Moore said his brother is obsessed with people abusing the internet and that he only viewed the images as part of his 'research' but he still agreed to kick him out for the sake of his marriage.

Grace lets the three men out but her suspicions are raised when James Marford makes a comment about the other two men running out the station almost 'like they want the bomber to escape' and makes a comment about it being a fluke that the charity boss survived anyway, covering it by saying that's what he told him.

As Jack looks at the pictures with Mickey things become clearer...James Marford is Colin Moore and by the time they radio it back to the station he's already left. The real Marford is a customer that Moore helped who now works abroad. He's been playing them all along and enjoying showing off 'how clever he is'.

He's known to the Barton St child abuse unit but as an informer who enabled them to make lots of arrests but they hadn't heard of them for several months - the same amount of time since his sister in law caught him looking at the abuse images. William admits he's never really fitted in and is a bit of an oddball and genius. Noone knew how to handle him because he was too 'subversive' and lecturers accused him of hacking the universities computers which got him thrown out.

He now attends a church and has gotten into religion in a big way. His brother said he called his flatmate, Gilchrist, a Heathen. The timber yard owner is also involved in the church as a church warden... could he be the next victim? Or does he know where Moore could be? They've got just over an hour left.

They have a rough idea of where he could be living due to a cluster of calls from his mobile in the area before it was deactivated. The timber yard owner attended the same church and was able to give an address which CO19 are on the way to. Everyone is on edge because it could be boobtrapped. CID run inside and find a website open on a computer displaying footage that he must have taken himself from the bomb blasts showing he was present at each one. He has another room set up to show footage from outside his property. Whilst watching the streaming footage from outside, Jack spots Moore in the crowd and sends out an all unit call to catch him. Callum spots him and chases him down with Sally, Will and Ben. Unfortunately he manages to get into a gated community. The gates close behind him and Callum can't get in. He tries to plead with him that enough is enough and manages to grab him but can't get keep hold and Moore literally slips out of his fingers and has disappeared by the time someone arrives to let them in.

There's 40 minutes left.

Karen and Jack as Grace to have a look on the computer. They find a link to a webpage that looks like it could be a child abuse website before it starts to 'self destruct' and wipes itself so they contact CEOPS to see if they have any information. CEOPS forward a list of people they know involved in that website and they cross reference it with the list from Canley Computers customers whos computers Moore worked on. One name matches and luckily they have his address - they've found the target. CID bring him in but he doesn't admit having a threat and they don't want him to know why he's being targeted. He tells them that they know he's behind a website peddling child porn. He still won't admit it and is very cagey. He says at 3.30 he'd normally be at work but there's nothing found in his office. He admits that he was supposed to be at the charity shop where his wife works . She told him a package had been delivered for him there. It's in the car... and at 3.30 she'll be on the school run.

They head to the charity shop, hoping that's where Moore will be and they send another unit to go and find his wife and get the car locked down.

Sally is tasked with putting Emma's hat on the coffin. Callum tries to get himself excused from the funeral. He wants to go to the school, insisting that he was too late for Emma but won't be too late for this one. Smithy gently tells Gina he'll take Callum's place in charge of the bearer party and she reluctantly gives in and lets Callum go.

Given that Emma's father was seen onscreen and played a large part in various storylines, it seems rather strange that he at least isn't seen onscreen at her funeral. It would have been a nice touch, especially given how close they were. Despite this, as they do every time they show a police funeral - it's absolutely beautifully done.

The children of the school are very excited to see the police officers and the fire brigade and keep trying to watch despite the teachers and police trying to get them somewhere safe.

Moore spots the plain clothed police officers around the scene and takes a woman hostage. CO19 draw their guns and warn him he's surrounded and to let her go. Grace tries to negotiate with him and tell him that the package is in the back of a car on the way to do the school run and he's putting innocent children and the mans wife - who has done nothing and has no idea of his dark side - in danger. Moore holds his phone up as he holds the woman hostage, threatening to ring the mobile. He shouts that people don't listen until they're made to listen.

Mickey and Callum find the car and drag the womans wife out. Unfortunately she has a baby that's strapped in and the boys struggle trying to get the baby out given they're in single figure minutes. Callum shouts at Mickey to run.

Moore calmly tells Grace and Jack that it's about front page headlines, getting attention to the evils of the internet, making people listen. Grace reassures him he's done it and doesn't need to do anymore. He has his finger over the dial button...

Callum is struggling with the car seat as the baby cries, trying his best to get her free.

He presses the button and the call connects as Grace shouts "NO!"

The car explodes and the woman screams for her baby. The officers flinch and look away before Mickey hesitates and lifts the barrier tape

There, crouched and protecting a tiny bundle from the blast is The Terminator Callum.

Sally breaks down at the funeral through a reading but Callum appears at the back and reassures her helping her through it. She goes on to make the speech and they meet up outside at Emma's grave side.

"She's a good copper, went the extra mile. No compromise."

Sorry Callum, I think we saw different Emma's.

notes on chapter 2

Tree imagery is strong on pg 9: "I just thought it would be nice to see how people move into a place and start to inhabit it. Settle in. Maybe put down roots," and later, "He is merely expressing anxieties natural for a boy his age who has just been uprooted from his home in the city..."

Impetus: the force or energy with which a body moves. (pg 10)

Valences: 1. A length of decorative drapery attached to the canopy or frame of a bed in order to screen the structure or space beneath it. 2. A whole number that represents the ability of an atom or a group of atoms to combine w/ other atoms or groups of atoms. 3. Psychological term: the subjective value of an event, object, person, or other entity in the life space of the individual. Also, the pleasantness or unpleasantness of an emotional stimulus.

""This is nice," He says, removing a big clump of her blonde hair from the tines and tossing it into the wastebasket." (pg 11) Oddly, not the last time that hair seems to be a focus in this chapter?

"Nevertheless, despite their purely confessional content, it is not a journal entry but rather an unguarded moment captured on on eof the house Hi 8s that demonstrates Karen's almost bewildering dependence on Navidson." (pg 11) "In that peculiar contradiction that serves as connective tissue in so many relationships, it is possible to see that she loves Navidson almost as much as she has no room for him." (pg 12) [italics added by me for emphasis]

Second reference to hair: "I think Lude started giving one of them a trim, whipping out his scissors which he always has on hand, like old gunslingers I guess always had a hand on their Colts - there he goes, snipping locks & bangs... fingers & steel clicking away, tiny bits of hair spitting off into the surrounding turmoil..." (pg 12)

Galveston is a city in Texas (pg 12, footnote 18)

"The devil's ear" pg 15 - Devil's Ear Spring in Gilchrist County, Florida.

A thought: often, the notes here are used to prove, or at least point out, themes of Navidson's story. Should these be taken seriously? Or dismissed as part of the Fiction, even as red herrings?

"Don't forget to tell them about the birds." (pg 13) - Significant? Foreshadowing of his mother? Pelicans. Esp. considering how he works the tooth/eyebrow scar into the story too.

After the boxing/Birds of Paradise/Russian barge story: "... just looking at this story makes me feel a little queasy all of a sudden. I mean how fake it is. Just sorta doesn't sit right with me. It's like there's something beyond it all, a greater story still looming in the twilight, which for some reason I'm unable to see." (pg 15) Could be another reference to the way he used evidence of his abuse in the story (will come up later), also another nod to "authenticity"/existentialism, possibly proof that Story is starting to effect him. Especially considering how the note began when Karen mentioned the water heater, and Johnny seems to attribute that to his own water heater going out.

Vituperative: bitter and abusive. (pg 16)

"...as of late, many have called into question the accuracy of this self portrait, observing that Navidson may have gone too far out of his way to cast himself in a less than favorable light." (pg 17) This chapter begins with a Mary Shelley quote. Does Davidson consider himself Frankenstein, and the House (or the portrait which comes up later), Frankenstein's monster? It seems he carries plenty of blame/guilt on himself. Especially considering, later on that page, ",.. he also, by way of the film, admits to carrying around his own alienating and intensely private obsessions."

First mention of Delial on pg 17. The name itself could potentially be a mix up of a number of things, purposefully misspelled, purposefully carrying multiple meanings, purposefully vague. Delilah (Samson) seems most clear at the beginning, as seeming competition to Karen. Then misspelling of Belial, which is Hebrew for 'worthless', and the name of a demon in Scripture. Some also point out the similarity to the word denial, which makes sense when this individual is revealed. Someone on an MZD forum back in 2001 once suggested that it was an anagram for "L'ideal", referring to the poem by Charles Baudelaire. Here is a LINK to different translations of the poem. The poem is from Baudelaire's collection, "Les Fleurs du mal".

The "L'ideal" interpretation seems most correct, considering note 23, and the reference to the fake work "Jennifer Caps' Delial, Beatrice, and Dulcinea (Englewood Cliffs, N.J.: Thumos Inc., 1996)". Delial is Davidson's muse, hauntress, and ideal, just as Beatrice was to Dante, and Dulcinea was to Don Quijote.

Albatross (pg 17) - another bird reference. It is sometimes used metaphorically to mean a psychological burden that feels like a curse. Alludes to Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner."

This poem, and throw-away reference to the albatross, seem significant, because of this:

In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Robert Wealton mentions the poem by name and says of an upcoming journey that "I shall kill no albatross". Coleridge and Shelley were close acquaintances, as well.

Charles Baudelaire's collection of poems "Les Fleurs du mal" also contains poem called "L'Albatros", about men on ships who catch the albatrosses for sport.

Succoth word meaning: Boothes, to weave protection, weaving.

Succoth is also another name for the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles, or Feast of Booths, where Jewish people stay in temporary dwellings, specifically made out of branches with a roof of leaves, reflecting their wandering and the impermanence of their dwellings.

Hospitals in Gaza have warned that they would need to shut down if they don’t receive more fuel. Other supplies — such as water, medicine and food — also continue to run low.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees previously noted it would be unable to carry out aid operations after Wednesday night if it does not receive fuel supplies necessary for transport, water desalination and running medical equipment. The Israel Defense Forces insist that fuel is present in Gaza but monopolized by Hama.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned overnight that the situation is “growing more dire by the hour” in the Middle East and urged respect for civilian lives as the conflict unfolds.

Israel’s representative to the U.N. has called for the resignation of Guterres, following his remarks on the Israel-Hamas conflict and action in Gaza.

In response, Guterres said he was “shocked by the misinterpretations” of his address made before the U.N. Security Council.

Smiffina Episodes: Frontline 2 - Aftershock

Callum is sat outside the station in his car, lost in thought. Roger thanks him for trying to revive Emma and Will tells him he did everything he could. Everyone is numb and in shock.

SO15 have arrived to start working from Sun Hill. DI Karen "never knowingly underconfident" Lacey insists they will work it without uniform. She's happy for CID to follow up leads and bring them information but rather gruffly tells them SO15 - Counter Terrorism - are running the show. DI Lacey is told to show uniform more respect by Heaton and responds. "I'm sorry, I don't have much time for etiquette." With her in charge how likely is it that people would open up or want to tell her anything?! I bet her team cut her out.

Downstairs, the normally lively briefing room is so silent you could hear a pin drop. Gina tells them they gave 100 percent the day before and that she couldn't ask for more from them. She tells them it's protocol that she debriefs each of them but she's clearly struggling and Smithy steps up to take over the briefing. Heaton then explains what is going to happen. SO10 'understand feelings are running high'" "That's big of them." Callum snaps. Uniform are sent out to man the cordon though they're not happy.

Smithy asks how Callum is and after he dismisses the debriefing Smithy points out that it's not counselling. "Don't be a hero about it." "That's the last thing I am." Callum replies under his breath.

James Marford, approaches the front desk with a request to speak about his friend Michael Gilchrist who ran the photocopy shop that was targeted and who died in the bombing the day before. Grace and Gina speak to him and he claims his friend had been contacted by the bomber. He hands over an envelope he says his friend received. He says Gilchrist should have told the police but he wouldn't take it seriously. "Gilbert [nickname] Visit here and I will take you out of my equation'" is written on a napkin in biro despite the typed envelope. Marford says that he thinks Gilchrist knew what it meant but he wouldn't admit it. Gina asks him to stay so they can search the flat the men shared. Marford is rather odd, but as we know...

Grace checks Gilchrist's internet history and it appears he visited an adult site. She suspects it could have been a warning not to visit the website again. One of the businessmen Kezia has been looking into is an investor in the website and paid Gilchrist for making DVD sleeves. Karen says the scale and planning behind the attacks suggest a large, organised, politically motivated group. Several terrorist groups claim responsibility for it.

The helpdesk receives an email that mysteriously echoes a card for Emma that had been received earlier with a single white rose. There have also been other emails that could be linked.

Lesson one is thought to apply to the Copy Shop owned by Gilchrist as he had a link to pornography - both using it and the DVD sleeves.

Lesson two is thought to apply to the building where Emma was killed but the actual targeted building was an immigration - not a likely target for anti-fascists. The owner of the charity later shows himself to be a racist, fleecing the desperate families of potential immigrants. He claimed he hadn't had a note like the others, however his wife had been suspecting him of an affair and had been intercepting his mail. "Reveal your dark secrets or pay for them."

A third is received whilst they're talking. Kezia traces the emails to a cyber cafe and a terminal used by the same man each time. Unfortunately he wears a motorbike helmet so his face cannot be seen on CCTV. Heaton orders surveillance of the cafe.

Gina reminds Callum that he needs a debrief whether he likes it or not, literally writing his name in to see her at 11am. "Talented as I am, Callum. I'm not a mindreader..." she starts as he sits in front of her in silence. He insists there's nothing to say and that everything was done by the book. He's clearly stressed and affected as much as he pretends he isn't. He then eventually admits he feels responsible and that it was his fault because he was distracted by the fake doctor arrest. Gina tells him she's as responsible as he is because she could have told Emma to wait for backup and not to play the blame game because they can't second guess what will happen at any moment.

He's allowed to go to to be surveillance for the cyber cafe with Sally, Nate and Will and escapes Gina's office quickly. Callum spooks the suspect by making eye contact with him and he races off. They stop him eventually by crashing into his bike and making him fly over the bonnet of one of the cars! Sally goes for him with her ASP extended and Callum has to physically wrestle her away before she strikes him.

Smithy and Ben march the suspect through to take his prints and search him but he's silent all the way through to Jack interviewing him. He finally speaks, denying sending the emails and says he can't help him. He, Carl Adams, is suspected of being the sender of the notes after his fingerprint is found to be on the napkin of the first note - a napkin from the cyber cafe he uses and his handwriting is similar to the notes. His house is raided and found to be a "bomb factory" with fake passports, nails, fertiliser and more. Adams insists he knows nothing about it and that it was delivered to him without ordering it. It was bought with a skimmed credit card and he has a history of identity theft. He's adamant he knows nothing about any bombs and suspects he's being framed. He shouts that MI5 are behind the glass and is paranoid. Lacey and Jack review the card and find a payment was made to a couriers with Azure - or blue - in their names. The third email is starting to make sense.

Kezia and Mickey attend the house listed on the invoice and Jack tells them not to go in. Just as he does... Kezia steps on a booby trap and seems to have activated a trip switch. Mickey tries to keep her calm. Adams exists he's been speaking to a man in a chatroom who claims he is on the run from MI6. He was told to place a package in a garden and leave it there. It later became the boobytrap that Kezia stepped on. He can't tell them how to defuse it because he didn't make it and knows nothing about bombs. Mickey keeps talking throughout to Kezia whilst someone tries to defuse it and tries to keep her calm whilst Smithy is the boss at the cordon, ordering everyone to move back and keep out the way and sending the residents who haven't been evacuated inside their homes.

Karen is starting to suspect that Adams is telling the truth and that everything they've 'discovered' has actually been a direction from another source. She doesn't believe that Adams is the guilty party as why would they expose themselves with notes if they can build bombs. She thinks it's someone highly intelligent and highly motivated and not an idiot who 'got lucky'.

Unfortunately, Kezia is soon rescued by an expert who disarms the bomb without any explosions and she runs straight into Mickey's arms.

Callum confesses how guilty he feels to Sally as Will listens in. Will goes to Smithy and tells him that he thinks Emma and Callum were 'having a thing' and that he might need a break. Smithy goes to check on him. "I won't ask how your feeling...." "Appreciate that..." Smithy suggests he should take some personal time and they have a tussle to make themselves feel better and Gina giving it 'fed up mother parting her two sons' vibes as she comes out to seperate them. "Oi, oi, oi, oi, OI!" Complete with Smithy's "It's your fault mum is angry!" shoulder barge. "I don't even want to know what it's about!" she growls, demanding Callum take leave.

Callum stalks to the locker room and takes his frustrations out on his locker and throws it onto the floor, choking back tears when he sees a poster for Emma's collection.

Mickey reports back that the bomb in the garden was a fraud set up to look like the real thing and newspaper articles are found under it about identity fraud. There's a note too saying "You have the wrong man. Do I have to spell it out for you? The ELVIS FOUR. No bomb today." Grace works out that the ELVIS four is a slight anagram and actually means The Four Evils Of The Internet with a handy website to spell it all out.

Gilchrist was the pornography evil (DVD sleeves/porn site usage) as was the nightclub owner (shares in the porn site Gilchrist used and paid him for making the dvd covers)

The charity owner the right wing politics (Fleecing immigrants families and meeting with the boss of a right wing political party)

Adams the identity theft (has a history of doing it and had himself had his identity stolen by the bomber) and in doing so he tied up uniform, CID and SO15 manpower as a display of power.

The final one is the abuse of children and Sun Hill need to work out who is the most likely to be targeted...

Karen suspects that it's one person now working alone - but who could it be, and why?
